George M. Cohan's output was prolific. During his lifetime, he created more than three dozen Broadway musicals, and published over 300 songs, a list that includes the evergreen standards "You're a Grand Old Flag," "The Yankee Doodle Boy," and "Give My Regards to Broadway." So great was his career that there's a statue in Times Square in his likeness, and in 1968, he was the subject of a biographical musical. George M! played only 433 performances, but it won the 1969 Tony for Best Choreography, and a nomination, at least, for its leading man, Joel Grey. Several years later, in 1974, Grey took the stage at the Tony Awards to pay tribute to Cohan with a medley of his tunes. Get ready for your Independence Day with this tap-tastic collection of patriotic hits.
