Flashback Friday: Sally Field Introduces Herself as "Gidget" In a 1965 ABC Promo

Last night, two-time Oscar winner Sally Field was inaugurated as Broadway's latest Amanda Wingfield in Tennessee Williams' memory play The Glass Menagerie at the Belasco Theatre.

As TheaterMania is acutely aware, Field has an extensive and impressive body of work as some of television and film's most legendary mothers. However, her screen career began long before she became caretaker to Hollywood children. She was introduced to the world as TV's Gidget, the perky teenage tomboy who's as obsessed with surfing as she is with her hunky beach beau, Moondoggie.

To honor Field's return to Broadway, we dug up the adorable promo that led viewers to Gidget's ABC debut on Wednesday, September 15, 1965. Who'd have thought that little pigtailed cherub was a classical actress in the making.
