Full casting has been announced for the January 16, 2017, concert performance of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Highline Ballroom.
Morgan James will lead the gender-bending cast as Jesus Christ, with Shoshana Bean as Judas Iscariot and Alex Newell as Mary Magdalene.
The company will also feature Tony Award winner Debbie Gravitte as Caiaphas, Tony Award nominee Orfeh as Pontius Pilate, Tony Award nominee Keala Settle as Peter, Bryonha Marie Parham as Annas, Shayna Steele as Simon, and Ann Harada as King Herod. Ellyn Marsh, Sydney Morton, Pearl Sun, and Jasmin Walker will make up the ensemble.
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s biblical rock opera will be directed by Richard Amelius with musical direction by Julie McBride. A cast of 13 singers will perform the complete score, accompanied by an all-female band.
Jesus Christ Superstar, loosely adapted from the accounts written in the Gospels, charts the last week of Jesus' life. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show premiered on Broadway in 1971 and made its way to the West End a year later in 1972.
Morgan James, Richard Amelius, and Torya Beard serve as producers of the concert event.
