Sheldon Harnick reinvents his musical ”The Rothschilds” for the York Theatre Company.
Full casting has been announced for the York Theatre Company's upcoming world premiere production of Rothschild & Sons, a new reworking of Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Sherman Yellen's classic musical The Rothschilds. Jeffrey B. Moss directs the production, which features choreography by Denis Jones.
As previously announced, the production will star Tony nominee Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll & Hyde) as Mayer Rothschild, and Glory Crampton (Death Takes a Holiday) as his wife, Gutele. This one-act, intimate reimagining of the musical focuses on the relationships between family patriarch Mayer, his wife Gutele, and their five sons. Joining them in the cast are Peter Cormican, Jonathan Hadley, David Bryant Johnson, Christine LaDuca, Jamie LaVerdiere, Nicholas Mongiardo-Cooper, Mark Pinter, Curtis Wiley, and Christopher M. Williams.
With music by Bock, lyrics by Harnick, and book by Yellen, Rothschild & Sons is based on the creators' original The Rothschilds, which is itself inspired by the novel of the same name by Frederic Morton. The work also features several songs not included in the original, with new lyrics by Harnick. The creative team includes James Morgan (set design), Carrie Robbins (costume design), Kirk Bookman (lighting design), and Jeff Marder (electronic music design).
The original Broadway production of The Rothschilds, which played for over 500 performances in 1970, was the last collaboration between Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick.
This production will begin performances on October 6 for a limited engagement slated to run through November 8. Opening night is planned for October 18.
