Fun Home, School Girls, and More Set for New SpeakEasy Season

Boston's SpeakEasy Stage Company has announced six productions for its 2018-19 lineup.

Opening the season will be Stephen Adly Guirgis's 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Between Riverside and Crazy, making its New England premiere. Performances will run September 7-October 6, with a September 9 opening.

Next will be Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron's 2015 Tony-winning musical Fun Home. Directed by Paul Daigneault (and based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel), performances will run October 19-November 17, with an October 21 opening.

Bess Wohl's Small Mouth Sounds will follow with its Boston premiere, running January 4, 2019-February 2, 2019, with an official January 6 opening.

Paul Melone then directs a production of the Tony-winning musical Once, based on the motion picture written and directed by John Carney. The show features a Tony-winning book by Enda Walsh, and music and lyrics by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová. Performances will run March 1-30, 2019, with an official March 3 opening.

Following will be the New England premiere of Jocelyn Bioh's School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, which made its world premiere this past fall at MCC's Lucille Lortel Theatre. Directed by Summer L. Williams, performances will run May 3-25, 2019, with an official May 5 opening.

Rounding out the season will be The View UpStairs, a new musical by Max Vernon. The show, set in the historic UpStairs Lounge, ran off-Broadway at Culture Project's Lynn Redgrave Theater in 2017. Performances will run May 31, 2019-June 22, 2019, with an official June 2 opening.
