The new Broadway musical offers a way to cure the winter blues.
We may have six more weeks of winter ahead of us, but Groundhog Day is offering a consolation prize. The new Broadway musical, opening this spring at the August Wilson Theatre, has announced a national sweepstakes to give away tickets to the first preview performance on March 16. The production is scheduled for an official April 17 opening.
From now through Friday, February 17, fans can enter on Facebook for the chance to win two tickets to the March 16 performance by liking Groundhog Day's official Facebook page and filling out the sweepstakes form on the entry page here.
Winners of the free tickets will be selected in a random electronic drawing from all eligible entries received and will be notified via email. Tickets are scheduled to be distributed at 11am EST on February 21, and winners must select their tickets via a unique code no later than 11am EST on February 23.
Groundhog Day is inspired by the 1993 film that tells the story of Pittsburgh weatherman Phil Connors, who finds himself caught in a time loop that forces him to repeat the same day, Groundhog Day, over and over. It features a score by Matilda The Musical composer Tim Minchin, and is directed by Matlida's Matthew Warchus, with original screen writer Danny Rubin providing the book.
The cast will be led by two-time Tony nominee Andy Karl as weatherman Phil Connors — the role he originated when the show opened last year at the Old Vic Theatre in London. Newcomer Barrett Doss (Burning at the New Group) will star opposite Karl as Rita Hanson.
