The modern ”Romeo and Juliet” tale will head to Staten Island.
Harbor Lights Theater Company, based in Staten Island, New York, has announced casting for its upcoming production of West Side Story, directed by Stephen Nachamie, at the Music Hall at Snug Harbor.
Inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story follows star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as they navigate their romance through a racially charged gang war between the Jets and the Sharks. The musical features a libretto by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with original choreography by Jerome Robbins.
Evy Ortiz (West Side Story national tour) and John Grieco will lead the cast as Maria and Tony, with Aléna Watters (Sister Act) as Anita, Michael Graceffa (Catch Me If You Can national tour) as Bernardo, and Dean Deluna as Chino. The cast will also feature local actor Mickey Tennenbaum, a Wagner College adjunct professor, as Doc; local playwright and director Joe Simonelli as Schrank; and local musician and actor Gary Moore as Glad Hand and Officer Krupke.
The creative team includes Tabitha Pease (set design), Jake Fine (lighting design), Kurt Alger (costume design). Michael Mastromarino (technical director), and Duane McKee (sound design).
