John Tiffany says Broadway plans are “all sorted” following the Olivier Awards ceremony.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child walked away from yesterday's Olivier Awards with a record-breaking nine statues for its West End debut as well as possible confirmation of a Broadway transfer.
The London hit has been in talks for a Broadway mounting for several months — producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, along with J.K. Rowling, previously confirming discussions with the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) about bringing the play to Broadway's Lyric Theatre next spring.
Following yesterday's ceremony, however, director John Tiffany (who earned the award for Best Director) suggested that details for the Broadway run are now set in stone. According to WhatsOnStage.com, Tiffany stated: "It's all sorted. We've got the Lyric Theatre, and I think we're almost there with the actors. We open next year, spring."
As previously reported, ATG is planning a multimillion dollar renovation to completely transform, remodel, and reconfigure the 1,900 seat Lyric Theatre and turn it into a scaled down, more intimate playhouse, with approximately 1,500 seats.
Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is written by Thorne and directed by Tiffany, with movement by Steven Hoggett. The two-part play is now in performance at the West End's Palace Theatre.
