”Bernhardt/Hamlet”, ”The Thanksgiving Play”, and more also join the season lineup.
The Geffen Playhouse has announced eight productions set for its 2019-20 season, with one additional production to be announced. The season will launch Tuesday, August 20, and run through Sunday, July 19, 2020.
Opening the season will be the West Coast premiere of Jen Silverman's Witch (August 20-September 29), directed by Marti Lyons, followed by the West Coast premiere of Joshua Harmon's Skintight (September 3-October 6), featuring Tony winner Idina Menzel who will reprise the role she originated off-Broadway with Roundabout Theatre Company in 2018. Daniel Aukin will also reprise his direction.
Next up will be Larissa FastHorse's The Thanksgiving Play (October 22-December 1), directed by Michael John Garcés, followed by a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth (November 5-December 8), directed by Matt Shakman and starring Game of Thrones Emmy nominee Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Next will be the world premiere of Key Largo (February 4, 2020-March 8, 2020), a new adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher and Oscar-nominated actor Andy Garcia, based on the play by Maxwell Anderson and the screenplay by Richard Brooks and John Huston. Garcia will star as Johnny Rocco.
The next production, yet to be announced, is slated for March 3, 2020-April 12, 2020, and will be followed by the West Coast premiere of Theresa Rebeck's Bernhardt/Hamlet (April 7, 2020-May 10, 2020), which was commissioned by and premiered on Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company this past fall, starring Janet McTeer. Sarna Lapine will direct the Geffen production.
The Enigmatist (May 5, 2020-June 14, 2020), written and performed by David Kwong, will then make its West Coast premiere, followed by the final production of the season, Revenge Song: A Vampire Cowboys Creation (June 16, 2020-July 19, 2020), a world premiere and Geffen Playhouse commission by Qui Nguyen. The production will be directed by Robert Ross Parker and feature the Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company.
