New York City
The ”Rent” and ”Wicked” star returns to his musical theater roots this summer.
The Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch will welcome stage and screen star Taye Diggs in the title role for a 12-week engagement beginning July 22 at the Belasco Theatre. The announcement confirms rumors that began circulating last week when Diggs tweeted a photo of himself with a copy of the show's libretto in full view.
Diggs' run in Hedwig marks his first New York stage appearance since 2005, when he starred in Second Stage Theatre's off-Broadway revival of A Soldier's Play. His musical theater credits also include Carousel, Rent, Chicago, Wicked, and Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party. On-screen he has been seen in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday, the film versions of Rent and Chicago, and the series Private Practice and Murder in the First.
Written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows the titular transgender rock performer as she recounts her life during a concert at Broadway's Belasco Theatre, where the musical runs. Michael Mayer directs the revival, which also stars Rebecca Naomi Jones as Hedwig's husband, Yitzhak.
Darren Criss, who currently stars as Hedwig, plays his final performance on July 19.
