Broadway veteran Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast in Skydance’s new sci-fi film Life, according to Variety. Daniel Espinosa will direct the film, which is also set to star Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson.

Penned by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the film will follow a group of astronauts from the International Space Station who discover that a sample from Mars shows unexpected signs of life. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis, and Julie Lynn will produce.

Gyllenhaal appeared on Broadway last season alongside Tony nominee Ruth Wilson in Nick Payne's two-person play Constellations and also starred in a concert presentation of Little Shop of Horrors presented by New York City Center. His recent film work has included Demolition, Everest, and Southpaw.
