Actress Jean Simmons has died of lung cancer according to an Associated Press report. She was 80.

She played Desiree Armfeldt in the West End and U.S. national tour of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Her film roles included Sister Sarah Brown opposite Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra in the movie version of Guys and Dolls, and Ophelia in Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination.

She received a second Oscar nomination for her performance in The Happy Ending and won an Emmy Award for her work in the mini-series The Thorn Birds. Among her other credits are such films as Great Expectations, Elmer Gantry, Spartacus, The Big Country, The Robe and The Earth is Mine.
