Jeffrey Tambor has withdrawn from playing the role of Georges in the Broadway revival of La Cage Aux Folles, at the Longacre Theater. He began performances on Tuesday, February 15, along with Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein who plays Albin/.Zaza.
A replacement for Tambor is expected to be announced shortly. Tambor’s understudy, Chris Hoch, played the role at the February 25 performance.
According to a statement released by the show’s producers, Tambor was recovering from recent hip surgery and found doing the show eight times per week to be too physically demanding.
The musical features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret. This production is choreographed by Lynne Page and directed by Terry Johnson, who won a 2010 Tony Award for his direction.
