West End leading man and recording artist Jeremiah James will play the role of El Gallo in the Off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks, at the Snapple Theater Center, beginning tonight, May 8. He replaces Edward Watts.

James’ previous roles include Billy Bigelow in the West End revival of Carousel, and he was an L. A. Ovation Award Best Actor nominee for his performance as Bobby Child in Crazy for You. His recordings include Teatro (Sony/BMG) and Tupelo (Yellow Sound Label).

Featuring music by Harvey Schmidt, and book/lyrics/direction by Tom Jones, The Fantasticks is a modern twist on Romeo and Juliet, centering on a boy and girl who go out into the world and discover that with love comes responsibility, with independence comes danger, and with experience comes joy. The score includes the hit songs “Try To Remember”, “They Were You” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.”

The Fantasticks company also features triple platinum recording artist Aaron Carter, Bill Bateman, MacIntyre Dixon, Tom Flagg), Heidi Giberson, Matt Leisy, Michael Nostrand, Dan Sharkey, Juliette Trafton, and Charles West. As previously reported, John Davidson, the celebrated actor who starred as Matt in the 1964 Hallmark Hall of Fame version of The Fantasticks, will join the cast on June 1 for a limited engagement in the role of Henry, The Old Actor.
