The new ”Newsies” film hits cinemas February 16.
The original Broadway and touring casts of Disney's Newsies reunited on February 13 at the premiere of the new film Newsies: The Broadway Musical. The filmed presentation of the live stage musical, distributed by Disney Theatrical Productions and Fathom Events, will be seen in cinemas February 16, 18, and 22.
Jeremy Jordan stars, reprising his Tony Award-nominated performance as Jack Kelly, along with original cast members Kara Lindsay (Katherine), Ben Fankhauser (Davey), and Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie). North American tour stars Steve Blanchard (Joseph Pulitzer) and Aisha de Haas (Medda Larkin) also join the cast, with additional performers from the Broadway and North American tour ensemble.
Jordan and his fellow returning original Broadway cast members joined the cast of the North American tour for a performance filmed on Sunday, September 11, at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in front of an invited audience.
Inspired by the 1992 film of the same name, Newsies tells the story of a group of tenacious newsboys at the turn of the last century who band together to form a union and lead a strike after selling prices are raised. The musical, which originated at Paper Mill Playhouse, won Tony Awards for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre and Best Choreography. It features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by Harvey Fierstein. At the time of Newsies' Broadway closing, it had played 1,005 performances at the Nederlander Theatre.
