The award recognizes the director-choreographer’s contribution to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots) will received the 2023 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his work on behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The annual award, which is announced ahead of the Tony Awards ceremony on June 11, is presented to a member of the theater community who has made outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes.
Mitchell organized the very first Broadway Bares during the height of the AIDS crisis in 1992, raising $8,000 for BC/EFA. The annual event has since increased in size, with last year’s 30th anniversary edition pulling in $1.9 million.
“Jerry’s passion and drive for philanthropy is unparalleled and his contributions as an advocate and mentor for the LGBTQ+ and Broadway communities are immeasurable,” said said Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, in a joint statement.
The cutoff for Tony consideration is today. The nominations will be announced next Tuesday.
