Set on the day England enters World War II, Freud’s Last Session imagines a meeting between the legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud (Hirsch) and rising academic C.S. Lewis (Cavanagh). Just weeks before the doctor chooses to take his own life, the pair spar on the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of it all. St. Germain’s play is inspired by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr.’s book, The Question of God. The playwright’s credits also include The Best of Enemies and Dr. Ruth: All the Way, among others.
Hirsch won an Emmy award for his performance as Alex Rieger on the hit sitcom Taxi. He received Tonys for his stage work in Conversations with My Father and I’m Not Rappaport, and an Oscar nomination for the film Ordinary People. Cavanagh has been seen on stage in Urinetown, Shenandoah, and Some Americans Abroad. Besides Ed, his many television appearances include Scrubs, Love Monkey, and Eli Stone.
