New York City
The lineup includes a variety of shows geared toward kids and adults.
The 2013 La MaMa Puppet Series, featuring various interpretations of the art form from around the world, will run from November 7-24. The shows will be performed at three venues: the Ellen Stewart Theatre, the First Floor Theatre, and The Club.
Some of the shows will be of interest to older children and adults. In Echo in Camera the myth of Orpheus is used to examine the relationships that hearing, understanding, and identity have to one another. Are They Edible? is a multisensory puppetry performance inspired by Homer's epics, The Iliad and The Odyssey. In The Orphan Circus two junk peddlers create a small circus of visual tableaus to evoke the life of a cabaret troupe of derelicts and misfits. The God Projekt is a darkly humorous, Beckettian take on a prayer-besieged deity. And in Dorme a little girl goes to sleep and embarks on a journey within her dreams and nightmares.
Other shows in the series are geared specifically toward younger puppetry enthusiasts: Goldilocks & the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs will delight children aged 2 to 5, and Squirrel Stole My Underpants is a poignantly silly adventure tale that the whole family will enjoy.
La MaMa's 2013 Puppet Series is curated by Denise Greber and features the works of Roman Paska, Jeanette Yew, Les Sages Fous and South Miller, Kevin Augustine's Lone Wolf Tribe, La Capra Ballerina and Laura Bartolomei, WonderSpark Puppets, and Bonnie Duncan.
