The Other Place met the press on Monday, November 26 at Manhattan Theatre Club’s rehearsal studio. Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (
Wicked) helms the upcoming Broadway production of the show, which will preview at Manhattan Theatre Club’s
Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on December 11, with an official opening on January 10.
The psychological drama was originally produced off-Broadway by MCC Theater at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Spring 2011.
For the Broadway staging, three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) repeats her acclaimed performance as neurologist Juliana Smithton, for which she won an Obie and a Lucille Lortel Award. Joining Metcalf in the production are Daniel Stern (Home Alone) as Juliana’s husband, Ian, John Schiappa (Assassins) as “The Man,” and Zoe Perry (The Lieutenant of Inishmore), Metcalf’s real-life daughter, as “The Woman.”
The Other Place follows Juliana as her life spirals out of control. Her husband (Stern) files for divorce, her daughter (Perry) runs off with a much older man (Schiappa), and, after spotting a woman in a yellow bikini within a crowd of people in business attire, she begins to realize that her physical and mental health are in jeopardy.
The creative team includes Eugene Lee (scenic design), David Zinn (costume design), Justin Townsend (lighting design), Fitz Patton (original music, sound design), and William Cusick (projection design).
