Miranda’s musical begins previews on January 20.
Lin-Manuel Miranda's new musical Hamilton hasn't even begun previews yet, but it's already extending for a second time. The musical, last scheduled to close on March 22, will now run through Sunday, April 5. Beginning previews at the Public Theater's Newman Theater on January 20, the show officailly opens February 17.
Directed by Thomas Kail and inspired by Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton explores the life of the American founding father and first Secretary of the Treasury, as well as his experiences as an orphan of the British West Indies who immigrated to the 13 Colonies and helped shape the United States of America.
Miranda takes on the title role, with a principal cast that includes Christopher Jackson (George Washington), Brian d'Arcy James (King George), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton), Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr), Daveed Diggs (Marquis De Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson), Anthony Ramos (John Laurens, Phillip Hamilton), Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan, James Madison), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Shuyler, Maria Reynolds), as well as an ensemble made up of Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Stephanie Klemons, Jon Rua, Seth Stewart, Betsy Struxness, Ephraim Sykes, and Voltaire Wade-Greene. Swings are Andrew Chappelle and Alysha Deslorieux. Javier Muñoz serves as standby for Hamilton.
Hamilton features scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, music direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler.
