Long Beach Opera is to present Astor Piazzolla and Horacia Ferrer’s Maria de Buenos Aires on January 29 and February 4. Andreas Mitisek will conduct and direct the production.
This production sets the opera during Argentina’s “Dirty War,” the period between 1976 and 1983 when the country was governed by military juntas.
Performers will include Peabody Southwell (María), Gregorio Gonzales (El Payador), and Gregorio Luke (El Duende), as well as dancers from the Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre.
The design team will include Dan Weingarten (lighting designer), Adam Fleming (video designer), and Bob Christian (sound designer).
