Duncan Sheik, Steven Sater, and Jessie Nelson collaborate on a new musical inspired by ”Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.
Alice by Heart, a new musical featuring a score by Spring Awakening collaborators Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater and a book by Sater and Jessie Nelson, is set to begin performances January 30 in the Newman Mills Theater at the new Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space. Take a look below at moments captured inside the rehearsal room at New 42nd Street Studios.
Directed by Nelson with choreography by Rick and Jeff Kuperman, the production stars Molly Gordon, Mia DiLena, Zachary Downer, Noah Galvin, Ari Groover, Michael Hartung, Zachary Infante, Andrew Kober, Grace McLean, Nkeki Obi-Melekwe, Catherine Ricafort, Colton Ryan, Heath Saunders, Wesley Taylor, and Natalie Walker.
Alice by Heart, which is inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is described as follows: "In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer's budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland."
The creative team includes Edward Pierce (scenic design), Paloma Young (costume design), Bradley King (lighting design), Dan Moses Schreier (sound design), and J. Jared Janas (hair, wig, and makeup design), with orchestrations by Sheik, additional orchestrations by Simon Hale, and music direction and vocal arrangements by Jason Hart.
