Marjorie Johnson will return to the cast of Colman Domingo's Dot at the Vineyard Theatre after originating the title role during its world premiere engagement at the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival. Johnson replaces Leslie Uggams, who was previously announced to star in the New York premiere production. According to press materials, Uggams received an offer to play a recurring role on a television series and regretfully needed to withdraw.

In addition to creating the role of Dot, Johnson appeared in Katori Hall’s Hoodoo Love at the Cherry Lane Theatre and won the Audelco Award for her portrayal of Winnie Mandela in M: The Mandela Saga at Theater for the New City. She has also appeared off-Broadway in the Pearl Theatre‘s The House of Bernarda Alba and on Broadway in The Little Foxes.

The cast will also include Finnerty Steeves (Brighton Beach Memoirs), along with the previously announced Sharon Washington, Stephen Conrad Moore, Libya V. Pugh, Colin Hanlon, and Michael Rosen.

Directed by Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, Dot will begin its run at the Vineyard on February 4, 2016, in advance of a February 23 opening. The play tells the story of family matriarch Dotty, whose three adult children gather for the holidays with more than exchanging gifts on their minds. As Dotty struggles to navigate life with dementia, her children fight to balance care for their mother and care for themselves.
