Martin Sherman’s Tony-Nominated Bent Set to Begin Run at Mark Taper Forum

The play’s first major U.S. revival since its Broadway premiere in 1979 starts today.

Center Theatre Group’s production of Martin Sherman’s Tony-nominated play, Bent, begins this evening at the Mark Taper Forum. Set in 1930s Germany, the drama explores the ability of love to flourish even in the most inhumane conditions. As the Nazi party comes to power in Germany, two men desperately struggle to survive the relentless persecution of homosexuals. In this time of turmoil, they are able to find both love and strength in each other.

Tony nominee Moisés Kaufman (I Am My Own Wife) directs. The cast features Hugo Armstrong, Ray Baker, Tom Berklund, Matthew Carlson, Brionne Davis, Wyatt Fenner, Patrick Heusinger, Charlie Hofheimer, Andy Mientus (Les Misérables), Jake Shears (lead of Scissor Sisters), Brian Slaten, and Jonathan B. Wright.

The creative team includes lighting design by Justin Townsend, set and costume design by Beowulf Boritt (Hand to God), sound design by Cricket S. Myers , wigs and hair design by Carol F. Doran, fight direction by Steve Rankin (Jersey Boys), and choreography by Ken Roht.

Performances will run through August 23.
