The Broadway veteran joins a cast led by Christy Altomare and Derek Klena.
Mary Beth Peil will join the Broadway cast of Anastasia in the role of Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, a role she originated in the musical's world premiere production at Hartford Stage, producers have announced. The show will open at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 24, with previews begining March 23.
Peil joins previously announced cast members Christy Altomare as Anya, Derek Klena as Dmitry, John Bolton as Vlad Popov, Ramin Karimloo as Gleb, and Caroline O’Connor as Countess Lily Malevsky-Malevitch. Full casting will be announced at a later date.
With direction by Tony winner Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), the creative team also includes Peggy Hickey (choreography), Alexander Dodge (set design), Linda Cho (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design), Aaron Rhyne (projection design), Charles LaPointe (hair and wig design), Thomas Murray (music supervision and direction), and Doug Besterman (orchestrations).
Ahrens and Flaherty penned the tunes for the 1997 animated film on which the stage musical is based. They have expanded their score, which contains the songs "Once Upon a December" and "Journey to the Past," for the theatrical production.
