MCC Theater is obviously happy with Neil LaBute.

The off-Broadway company will present the prolific playwright’s newest work, Reasons to Be Happy, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre from May 16 to June 23. LaBute also helms the follow-up to his Tony-nominated play, Reasons to Be Pretty, which was first produced by MCC. Casting will be announced at a later date.

In Reasons to Be Happy, Steph and Greg are hoping to get back together after three years, except she’s married to someone else, and he’s just started dating her best friend, single mom Carly.

As a playwright, LaBute made his Broadway debut with Reasons to Be Pretty. His many off-Broadway credits include The Shape of Things, Fat Pig, The Mercy Seat, and Wrecks. He is the author of the films Nurse Betty, Your Friends & Neighbors, In the Company of Men, and The Wicker Man, and the director of the films Lakeview Terrace and Death at a Funeral.

The work replaces John Pollono’s previously announced Small Engine Repair, which has been delayed due to scheduling conflicts of the cast, which included Christopher Fitzgerald and Jon Bernthal. MCC intends to produce the play at a later date.
