Lucas Hnath’s new drama is presented as a coproduction between Playwrights Horizons and Center Theater Group.
The cast and creative team of Lucas Hnath's The Christians met the press at Playwrights Horizons on August 14. The Christians begins performances off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons on Friday, August 28, with a run through October 11 (opening night is set for September 17). It will then play Center Theatre Group's Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles December 2-January 10, with opening night taking place December 13.
The drama, which had its world premiere in the 2014 Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville, will star Emily Donahoe (33 Variations), Andrew Garman (Salome), Philip Kerr (A Time to Kill), Larry Powell (Broke-ology), and Linda Powell (On Golden Pond). Garman, Ms. Powell, Mr. Powell, and Donahoe all starred in the Louisville production.
A look at faith in America and its power to unite or divide, The Christians finds Pastor Paul (Garman) preaching a sermon that will shake the foundation of his congregation's beliefs. Les Waters directs the work, which will include a live, rotating 20-person choir drawing singers from all five boroughs. The production will feature scenic design by Dane Laffrey, costume design by Connie Furr, lighting design by Tony Award nominee Ben Stanton, and sound design by Jake Rodriguez.
