Masterpiece will present the Tony-nominated drama on the small screen.
PBS' Masterpiece series and the BBC will produce a small-screen adaptation of Mike Bartlett's Tony-nominated drama King Charles III, set to air on PBS in 2017.
Bartlett will pen the screenplay for the 90-minute film, which will be helmed by original director Rupert Goold and star Tim Pigott-Smith, who originated the title role in London and on Broadway. Masterpiece and the BBC present the work in association with Drama Republic.
King Charles III follows the longtime prince, who ascends the throne after a lifetime of waiting for the queen's death. The play asks the question, "How to rule?" as it explores "the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain's most famous family."
The Broadway production played 103 performances in a limited run at the Music Box Theatre from November 2015-January 2016. It received 5 Tony nominations, including Best Play, Best Director, and Best Leading Actor in a Play for Pigott-Smith.
Further casting and information will be announced.
