Logan received the 2010 Tony Award for his play ”Red” and penned the screenplays for ”Gladiator” and ”The Aviator”.
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center has announced that playwright and screenwriter John Logan will receive the 19th Monte Cristo Award, which annually honors a prominent artist whose work has had an extraordinary impact on American theater.
An alumnus of the O'Neill, Logan developed the musical Superhero, soon to open off-Broadway at Second Stage's Tony Kiser Theatre, at the O'Neill's 2017 National Music Theater Conference. His stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge opens on Broadway this summer as well at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. A gala evening in celebration of Logan's many achievements will be held at the Edison Ballroom on Monday, April 22.
Logan's other stage credits include Red, for which he earned the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as I'll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers, and the book for the 2014 musical The Last Ship, featuring a score by Sting. As a screenwriter, Logan has been three times nominated for the Oscar for his work on Gladiator, The Aviator, and Hugo.
Past playwrights to receive the award include August Wilson, Wendy Wasserstein, Edward Albee, Neil Simon, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
