McCarter Theatre Center and the Public Theater are partnering for a LAB Spotlight presentation of Nathan Alan Davis's new play Protect the Beautiful Place February 2-3 in the rehearsal-room-turned-performance-studio within the McCarter Theatre Center's Roger S. Berlind Theatre.

Said to be the first in a trilogy of new plays about a multigenerational African-American family, Protect the Beautiful Place is described as follows: "After the recent death of her husband, Gail works hard to keep her rural Illinois household running and to ensure her daughter, mother-in-law, and grandson are happy and healthy while coming to terms with her own mortality. Protect the Beautiful Place is a poignant exploration of how we define the idea of home and the choices we make to protect the ones we love."

Patricia McGregor will direct the presentation. These performances are a part of McCarter's LAB, a creative incubator in which artists are allowed two to four weeks to rehearse and explore the dramaturgical and aesthetic world of a project. McCarter's partnership with the Public Theater offers artistic guidance and resources from both institutions at the earliest stage in the playwright's process.
