The tête-à-tête between two legendary scholars begins tonight.
Performances of Freud’s Last Session start tonight at New Repertory Theatre at Arsenal Center for the Arts.
The show takes place on the eve of war in Europe, revolving around an imagined conversation between C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud. Lewis a former atheist turned devout Christian and Freud, whose beliefs are informed by the science to which he has dedicated his life, argue about more than just religion. As the air raid sirens sound and people are evacuated , the two great scholars challenge each other on topics from sex to love to the existence of God and even the meaning of life itself.
Artistic director Jim Petosa directs the show, which was written by Mark St. Germain. The cast features Shelley Bolman as C.S. Lewis and Joel Colodner as Sigmund Freud.
"We are pleased to finally bring Mark St. Germain’s wonderfully witty and much anticipated play to New Repertory Theatre," says Petosa. "This imagined conversation between C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud makes for a thought-provoking and entertaining night at the theatre. Mark St. Germain has imbued this work with the perfect balance of wry humor and razor-sharp dialogue characterizing these two legendary scholars."
The creative team includes Cristina Todesco (set design), Molly Trainer (costume design), Scott Pinkney (lighting design), David Remedios (sound design), and Leslie Sears (stage manager).
Performances will run through May 22.
