The Olivier Award-winning and Tony-nominated drama begins performances tonight.
Arthur Miller's Broken Glass, the first production of New Repertory Theatre's 2015-16 season, starts its run tonight.
The play begins on November 11, 1938, the day after Kristallnacht. Phillip Gellburg’s wife, Sylvia, mysteriously loses the ability to walk. Desperate to uncover the cause, Phillip seeks out Dr. Harry Hyman. The doctor surmises that the paralysis may be psychosomatic, propelling him into an obsession with finding a cure for Sylvia. A web of egos, resentment, and guilt, and Phillip’s desperate struggle with his own Jewish identity, punctuate the journey to find an answer to Sylvia’s plight.
The production features Benjamin Evett as Dr. Harry Hyman, Anne Gottlieb as Sylvia Gellburg, Christine Hamel as Harriet, Michael Kaye as Stanton Case, Jeremiah Kissel as Phillip Gellburg, and Eve Passeltiner as Margaret Hyman. Jim Petosa directs.
"The resounding authenticity of playwright Arthur Miller's voice has left an indelible legacy on the American stage," says Petosa. "We are proud to bring this Boston area premiere to our stage during the nationwide celebration of his 100th birthday and to share one of his last and most revealing plays with our audiences. As we begin a season in which we explore the fundamental elements of personal identity, I can think of few better playwrights with whom to begin this exploration than Arthur Miller."
The creative team includes Jon Savage (set design), Molly Trainer (costume design), Scott Pinkney (lighting design), David Remedios (sound design), and Anna Burnham (stage manager).
Performances will run through September 5.
