The Snow Queen starts its run at New Repertory Theatre this evening.

Adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, the show follows Gerda, a young woman whose best friend Kai is put under a magic spell. In order to save him, she must travel to the palace of the Snow Queen. Her journey is beset by battles with witches, encounters with fantastical creatures, and the frozen, wintry weather. Along the way to find her friend, however, she may find herself.

The adaptation features a book by Kirsten Brandt and Rick Lombardo with music by Haddon Kime and lyrics collaborated on by all three. Lombardo, previously the artistic director of New Rep, also directs and choreographs the play. The cast features Victoria Britt as Gerda, Aimee Doherty as The Snow Queen, Din A. Griffin as The River, The Prince, Flower, and Pigeon, Maureen Keiller as The Witch, Lady Crow, Robber Mother, and Woman of the North, Maurice Emmanuel Parent as Troll, Flower, Crow, and Reindeer, Kirsten Salpini as Flower and Ensemble, Nick Sulfaro as Kai, and Jackie Theoharis as Princess, Robber Girl, and Ensemble.

"In The Snow Queen, the audience is taken on a fun and fantastical journey, a quest as seen through the eyes and experiences of the play’s young heroine, Gerda," says coauthor and director, Rick Lombardo. "Audiences have shown us that children to seniors identify with the universal themes of Gerda and Kai's journey in the play, and respond powerfully to the exhilarating and visceral feel of the rock score."

The creative team includes Emily Intersimone (musical direction), Franklin Meissner (light design), Ryan Bates (set design), Frances Nelson McSherry (costume design), Rick Lombardo (sound design), Garrett Herzig (projection design), and Anna Burnham (stage manager).

Performances will run through December 20.
