The 2010-2011 Obie Awards — honoring the best of Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway — were presented in a May 16 ceremony at Webster Hall, co-hosted by S. Epatha Merkerson and
David Hyde Pierce.
F. Murray Abraham received the award for sustained excellence of performance, with other acting winners including André Braugher, Michael Chernus, Ethan Hawke, Hamish Linklater, Laurie Metcalf, Thomas Sadoski, Scott Shepherd, Brenda Wehle, and Charlayne Woodard.
Playwriting winners were Kristoffer Diaz, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity;
Samuel D. Hunter, A Bright New Boise; and Jonas Hassen Khemiri, Invasion!. Directing winners included Austin Pendleton, Three Sisters; Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, Peter and the Starcatcher; and Leigh Silverman, In the Wake and Go Back to Where You Are.
Presenters included Nina Arianda, Alec Baldwin, Margaret Colin, Mamie Gummer, Rose Hemingway, John Larroquette, Patina Miller, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Arian Moayed, Jim Parsons, Andrew Ranells, Liev Schreiber, and Frank Wood. The evening’s entertainment featured Anthony Rapp performing songs from Rent and his solo musical, Without You.
Among the attendees were Betsy Aidem, Annie Baker, Emily Bergl, Colman Domingo, and Steve Martin.
