On Tuesday, June 21, the first annual Off Broadway Alliance Awards, honoring commercial and not-for-profit Off Broadway productions, were presented at Sardi’s.
NEWSical the Musical: Full Spin Ahead was named Best New Musical, while Freud’s Last Session received Best Play. Revival winners included Transport Group’s production of the musical Hello Again, and the Public Theater production of The Merchant of Venice, which started Off-Broadway prior to its Broadway run. Sleep No More was the recipient of the award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience. The Audience Choice Award for Best Long-Running Show was given to Blue Man Group.
In addition to the competitive awards, six Legend of Off Broadway Awards were presented for sustained achievement to Blue Man Group, Charles Busch, Julie Halston, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, and Everett Quinton and 2011 Hall of Fame Awards were presented posthumously to Romulus Linney, Ellen Stewart, and Lanford Wilson.
Guests at the event included Book of Mormon stars Andrew Rannells and Lewis Cleale, Alison Fraser, Christine Pedi, Michael West, Max Von Essen, Alexandra Silber, and Jim Caruso.
