PHOTO FLASH: Melissa Etheridge as St. Jimmy in Broadway’s American Idiot

On Tuesday, February 1, Oscar winner and Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge joined Broadway’s American Idiot in the role of St. Jimmy for a one-week-only engagement, February 1-6, at the St. James Theater.

The musical features a score by Green Day. It is directed by Michael Mayer, who wrote the book with Armstrong, and features choreography by Steven Hoggett. It follows a group of working-class characters from as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration.The Tuesday night cast was headed by Van Hughes (covering the role of Johnny usually played by John Gallagher Jr.), Stark Sands, Michael Esper, and Rebecca Naomi Jones.

The role of St. Jimmy was originally played by Tony Vincent and was recently portrayed by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who will return to complete his previously reported 50-performance engagement, February 10-27.

Etheridge has previously appeared on Broadway during a one-night special performance during the finale of the musical Million Dollar Quartet. The singer/songwriter’s latest album Fearless Love was recently released on Island Records. Her numerous hits include “Come to My Window,” “Bring Me Some Water,” “Like The Way I Do,” and “Ain’t It Heavy.”
