Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad will direct Westport Country Playhouse‘s closing production of its 2012 season, Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun, October 9 — November 3.
Set on Chicago’s South Side in the 1950s, the plot revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis and matriarch Lena. When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago.
The cast includes Gabriel Brown (George Murchison), Alvin Crawford (Bobo), Lynda Gravátt (Lena Younger), John Hemphill (Karl Linder), Edena Hines (Beneatha Younger), Billy Eugene Jones (Walter Lee Younger), Luka Kain (Travis Younger), Ade Otukoya (Moving Man), Hubert Point-Du Jour (Joseph Asagai), Donnell E. Smith (Moving Man), and Susan Kelechi Watson (Ruth Younger).
The design and production team includes David Blackwell (associate director), Edward Burbridge (scenic design), Tony award nominee Esosa (costume design), Xavier Pierce (lighting design), Lindsay Jones (sound design), Tara Rubin Casting, Matthew Melchiorre (production stage manager), and Karen Hashley (assistant stage manager).
