The special edition of Alice Walker’s novel is being published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt/Mariner Books.
Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple, will be republished in a special edition featuring the show artwork for the upcoming Broadway musical revival. The new edition, which will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt/Mariner Books, will be available November 10, the day the new Broadway production begins previews.
Adapted from Alice Walker's novel, The Color Purple musical features a book by Marsha Norman with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. It tells the story of a woman named Celie as she navigates her life in rural Georgia in the early 1900s. Broadway's upcoming revival, which originated at London's Menier Chocolate Factory in 2013, has an opening night set for December 10.
The Color Purple will be directed by Tony winner John Doyle at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The show's cast is led by Cynthia Erivo (as Celie), Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson (as Shug Avery), Danielle Brooks (as Sofia), Isaiah Johnson (as Mister), Joaquina Kalukango (as Nettie) as Nettie, and Kyle Scatliffe (as Harpo).
Walker's novel won the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction and the National Book Award in 1983 and was a New York Times bestseller.
