Film biography ”Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love” received a premiere screening at New York City’s Paley Center for Media.
On Monday evening, friends, family and former colleagues of the late stage and film composer Marvin Hamlisch congregated at the Paley Center for Media to preview Tony-winning producer Dori Berinstein’s upcoming film biography, Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love. The film will join THIRTEEN’s American Masters series, closing out season 27 with its national premiere on December 27.
Before his untimely passing on August 6, 2012, Hamlisch made his mark in music history as one of only two PEGOT winners, earning a Pulitzer Prize, four Emmy Awards, four Grammy Awards, three Oscars, and a Tony Award throughout his illustrious career. In the world of Broadway, he is best known as the musical mastermind behind the Tony Award-winning score of A Chorus Line. He also composed the music for a number of other shows including Sweet Smell of Success, The Goodbye Girl, and They’re Playing Our Song. Hamlisch saved some of his greatest hits, however, for the silver screen, with tunes like “The Way We Were” and “Nobody Does It Better” and composed scores to classic films like The Sting and Sophie’s Choice.
Joining producer Berinstein on Monday evening were Hamlisch’s wife, Terre Blair, singers Melissa Manchester and Quincy Jones, and many more friends and artists who came out to celebrate Hamlisch’s legacy.
