A one-night only reading of Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s acclaimed play, Intimate Apparel, will be held at 7pm on Monday, January 7 at the Pershing Square Signature Center. Jade King Carroll will direct the reading, which will benefit www.donordirection.org.
The play tells the heartfelt story of Esther Mills, an African-American seamstress living and working in 1905 New York, who suddenly finds herself torn between her feelings for the Hasidic merchant whose store she frequents and a lonesome Caribbean man with whom she begins corresponding. The work has won numerous honors, including the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.
The cast will feature Obie Award winner Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Ruined) as Esther, Ari Graynor (The Performers) as Mrs. Van Buren, Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry (The Scottsboro Boys) as George Armstrong, Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins (Caroline, or Change) as Mrs. Dickson, Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad (Stick Fly) as Mayme, Drama Desk Award nominee Morgan Spector (Russian Transport) as Mr. Marks. Dominique Morriseau will be the Narrator.
Nottage won the Pulitzer Prize for Ruined. Her other plays include By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, Crumbs from the Table of Joy, and Fabulation, or The Re-Education of Undine.
