Rob Ashford will direct and choreograph a stage musical version of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, according to a report in Variety.com. As previously reported, Linda Woolverton, who wrote the screenplay for the film, is writing the book for the project.

The stage production will follow the plot of the movie about the title character, now 19, who flees the realities of her world by returning to Wonderland, where she becomes involved in a war with the Red Queen.

Ashford is currently represented on Broadway with How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. He won a Tony Award for Best Choreography for Thoroughly Modern Millie and his many stage credits include Promises, Promises, Parade, Cry-Baby, Curtains, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Anna Christie.
