Sandy Duncan to Star in One-Night Reading of Driving Miss Daisy

Three-time Tony nominee Sandy Duncan will take on the title role for a one-night-only reading of Alfred Uhry's Driving Miss Daisy at George Street Playhouse on Monday, March 21.

The reading, also featuring Kevyn Morrow (The Color Purple) as Hoke and Bob Hess (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) as Daisy’s son, Boolie, will be presented as part of the GSP Celebrity Event Series. Director Eric Woodall reunites with the cast, after having directed them in a full production of Driving Miss Daisy at North Carolina Theatre.

Throughout her career, Duncan has been nominated for three Tony Awards, two Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. Her Broadway credits include Peter Pan (Tony nomination), Chicago, My One and Only, and The Boyfriend, among others. On television, she starred in the CBS sitcom Funny Face, The Sandy Duncan Show, and for several seasons appeared in Valerie’s Family as Sandy Hogan.

The 1988 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, Driving Miss Daisy tells the story of Daisy Werthan, an elderly Southern Jewish woman, and her African-American chauffer Hoke. The narrative begins in 1948 and spans nearly 25 years as their initial troubled pairing turns into a lasting and transformative friendship. In 1989, the play was made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman.
