Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon will portray First Lady Laura Bush in an upcoming reading of Tony Kushner’s Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy. Gordon Edelstein will direct the reading, which will take place on Monday, October 25 at 7pm at the Long Wharf Theatre, located at 222 Sargent Drive in New Haven.

Kushner’s work-in-progress imagines Laura Bush reading Dostoevsky to an audience of pajama-clad Iraqi children. Kushner and Sarandon are well known as both theater artists and progressive activists. Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy has already had several readings across the U.S.; following the Long Whart reading, Edelstein will moderate a discussion about the work.

Tickets for the event are priced at $25 for general admission, $20 for Long Wharf subscribers, and $10 for students. They are available by phoning 203-787-4282 or (toll free) 800-782-8497, in person at the Long Wharf box office, and through the Internet by clicking here.
