Second Stage Theatre has announced two productions set for the 14th season of its Uptown Series at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre. Founded in 2002, Second Stage Theatre's Uptown Series was created as a program to help develop and provide exposure for the voices of a new generation of theater artists.

The season opens with the world premiere of Sofia Alvarez’s Friend Art, beginning performances May 17 in advance of a May 26 opening. Directed by Portia Krieger, the play follows Kevin and Molly, a thirtysomething couple who are about to get married. Their best friend Nate, meanwhile, just broke up with Lil, his much younger performance-artist girlfriend. The comedy explores what it means to support the art and decisions your friends make, regardless of what it does to those relationships.

The New York premiere of Lucy Teitler's Engagements will follow, beginning performances on July 18 in advance of a July 28 opening. The play is described as "a dark comedy about ugly feelings in an age of beautiful self-images." Set during a New England summer, we meet Lauren, who takes it into her own hands to make sure that her best friend doesn’t marry an inadequate suitor. Her drunken mistake incites a cascade of calamities, threatening to expose all of Lauren's secrets. Engagements had its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company last August.
