The City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage festival presents free performances in Central Park.
Chilina Kennedy and the cast of Beautiful — The Carole King Musical performed a free concert as part of City Parks Foundation's SummerStage festival on August 3 at 8pm. Beautiful's performance, the first from a running Broadway musical to participate in the SummerStage festival, included classic hits from the Broadway production.
Beautiful, currently playing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, follows the early life and career of famed singer-songwriter Carole King. The production opened Jan 12, 2014 and went on to win Tony awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Jessie Mueller and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
The cast features Chilina Kennedy (Carole King), Scott J. Campbell (Gerry Goffin), Jessica Keenan Wynn (Cynthia Weil), Tony Award nominee Jarrod Spector (Barry Mann), Paul Anthony Stewart (Don Kirshner), and Tony Award nominee Liz Larsen (Genie Klein). The ensemble also includes Gisela Adisa, Andrew Brewer, E. Clayton Cornelious, Rebecca E. Covington, Josh Davis, Kevin Duda, James Harkness, Aisha Jackson, Brittney Johnson, Sara King, Julia Knitel, Douglas Lyons, Gabrielle Reid, Sara Sheperd, Yasmeen Sulieman, Daniel Torres, Melvin Tunstall, and Alan Wiggins.
With a book by Tony and Academy Award nominee Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni, and choreography by Josh Prince, the score of Beautiful features a collection of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
