Lexi Lawson and Michael Luwoye have also been announced to join the cast.
Two-time Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (Shuffle Along) will join the cast of Broadway's Hamilton in mid-August, replacing Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. Also newly announced to join the Broadway cast are Lexi Lawson, replacing Tony nominee Phillipa Soo in the role of Eliza Hamilton, and Michael Luwoye, who will perform as alternate to Javier Muñoz in the title role. Both Lawson and Luwoye will enter the cast on July 11.
As previously announced, Muñoz will formally take over the role of Alexander Hamilton on July 11, a part he has played as creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s alternate since the musical debuted off-Broadway last year.
Brandon Victor Dixon was nominated last season for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Shuffle Along, and was previously nominated for Best Featured Actor for the original production of the The Color Purple. Lawson returns to the music of Lin-Manuel Miranda, having performed in the first national tour of his Tony-winning Best Musical In the Heights in the leading role of Vanessa. Luwoye makes his Broadway debut in Hamilton, having appeared most recently off-Broadway in the musical Invisible Thread.
Directed by Thomas Kail and inspired by Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton explores the life of the American founding father and first Secretary of the Treasury, as well as his experiences as an orphan of the British West Indies who immigrated to the 13 Colonies and helped shape the United States of America. The show, which had its world premiere at the Public Theater, features a hip-hop score written by Miranda.
In addition to winning the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards this year, including the evening's biggest prize, Best Musical. The show's creator Lin-Manuel Miranda took home two prizes himself for both Book and Score, while his costar Leslie Odom Jr. bested him in the Leading Actor category. Cast members Renée Elise Goldsberry and Daveed Diggs also added to the musical's total, with wins for their featured performances.
