New York City
Performances of the new musical fairytale begins tonight.
Signature Theatre's production of Girlstar stars its run this evening.
Described as "The Voice meets Maleficent," the show begins with legendary record producer Daniella Espere, who is looking for the next international sensation. Her long-lost niece, Tina, appears as an unlikely but eager candidate. Having always dreamed of being a world-famous pop star, Tina seizes the opportunity despite warning signs that all may not be as it seems. The two form a mother-daughter bond as Daniella transforms Tina’s voice, image, and talent into star quality. As the journey continues and the unusual quality of Daniella’s mentorship becomes stranger, Tina is confronted with the question: How far is too far to go to become a star?
The musical’s book and lyrics are by Anton Dudley and set to music by Brian Feinstein. Eric Schaeffer directs the production, and the cast features Donna Migliaccio as Daniella Espere, Desi Oakley as Tina, Bobby Smith as Uncle Derek, Sam Edgerly as Jeff, Diana Huey as Piper, Jamie Eacker as Neela, and Kelle Knighten Hough, Nora Palka, and Bayla Whitten as the ensemble.
The creative team includes Lorin Latarro (choreography), Adam Wachter (musical direction), Doug Besterman and Larry Blank (orchestration), Paul Tate dePoo III (scenic design), Frank Labovitz (costume design), Jason Lyons (lighting design), Lane Elms (sound designer), Anne Nesmith (wig design), Matthew Haber (video design) and Kerry Epstein (stage manager).
Performances will run through November 15.
