Sarna Lapine will direct the Virginia production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s murderous musical.
Virginia’s Signature Theatre has announced casting for its upcoming production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, directed by Sarna Lapine. The show will be the final of three Sondheim productions featured in Signature’s 2022-23 season, and will run from May 16-July 9 in Signature’s MAX Theatre.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, Sweeney Todd follow the title barber who returns to London after a wrongful banishment and thirsts for vengeance against the corrupt judge who sent him away.
The cast of the Signature production will star Nathaniel Stampley (The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess) as Sweeney Todd and Bryonha Marie (The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess) as Mrs. Lovett, along with Rayanne Gonzales as the Beggar Woman, Ian McEuen as Adolpho Pirelli, Katie Mariko Murray as Johanna, Christopher Michael Richardson as the Beadle Bamford, Paul Scanlan as Anthony, Harrison Smith as Tobias, and John Leslie Wolfe as Judge Turpin. Rounding out the ensemble are Benjamin Lurye, Jimmy Mavrikes, Bob McDonald, Adelina Mitchell, Crystal Mosser, Lawrence Redmond, Katherine Riddle, Sarah Anne Sillers, and Chani Wereley. Julia Wheeler Lennon, Rebecca Madeira, Dylan Toms, and Hank von Kolnitz are swings.
Jon Kalbfleisch music directs, with choreography by Alison Solomon. The creative team also includes scenic design by Mikiko Suzuki MacAdams, costume design by Robert Perdziola, lighting design by Jesse Belsky, sound design by Eric Norris, and wig Ddesign by Anne Nesmith.
