The Bard-inspired musical revue takes the second slot in the Connecticut theater’s 2014 season.
Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse has announced a world premiere musical revue to join its 2014 season.
Sing For Your Shakespeare, directed by Mark Lamos and coconceived by Lamos, Wayne Barker, and Deborah Grace Winer, features musical selections from Broadway, pop, rock, jazz, opera, film, and Tin Pan Alley to explore the Bard's influence on the American Songbook. The second production of Westport Country Playhouse's 2014 season, Sing for Your Shakespeare will run from June 3-22.
"The show features numbers from Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's West Side Story, Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate, and Rodgers and Hart's The Boys from Syracuse," said Lamos. "But we also sing and dance to treasure troves of music from many greats, including Duke Ellington, Frank Loesser, jazz legend John Dankworth, and others."
The revue is based on a production developed in the spring of 2013 for the 92nd Street Y's Lyrics & Lyricists series. Catherine Cochran, executive producer of the 92Y production, said, "We are thrilled that last spring's Shakespeare-inspired Lyrics & Lyricists is taking shape as a new production that will delight audiences far beyond our New York City concert hall."
