Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company has announced the three theater companies it will host during its fifth annual Garage Rep season — an incubator program that offers young artists a larger platform on which to perform their work.
Prologue Theatre Company will then present a play by Katori Hall entitled Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, directed by TaRon Patton. The play is set in 1945 at Miss Mary’s Memphis beauty parlor and boarding house, where several African-American women discuss their uncertain futures if and when their husbands come home from fighting overseas in World War II.
The final selection is Walkabout Theater Company’s world premiere of The Wild, inspired by the work of playwright Charles Mee and created by Nigel Brown, Mac Dowd-Whipple, Al Evangelista, Cooper Forsman, Dana Murphy, and Paul Scudder. Directed by Thom Pasculli and with dramaturgy by Kendra Miller, The Wild takes place on an isolated tropical paradise in the midst of “rising tides, erotic dances, and seductive demi-gods.”
